Chow Chows always have a blackish tongue. Pigment would be correct.

researches believe chows are actually a cross between a spitz type dog and a bear in south asia as chows carry the same characteristics of this particular bear and none w/other dog breeds including the purple tongue. important note – unlike all other breeds, chows do not have peripheral vision due to the setting of their eyes which means a lot of bites from the breed. always make sure a chow knows you are there before petting him/her. can you tell i adore chows?!?!
bears and dogs can’t interbreed. It’s not possible.
Interesting facts – It is a great misconception that if a dog has blueish-blackish spots on the tongue that it must be part chow. Turns out that there are over 100 different dog breeds that can have these spots on the tongue and more pure the breed the more color on the tongue. However not all dogs in that breed are guaranteed to have the spots, for instance not all chows have a colored or even spotted tongue.
