why would you hold your dog like that? it seems really cruel. he doesn’t look very comfortable. and it looks like he’s about to throw the dog in the pool. ugh, this picture is just disturbing!
Really, have you ever seen a pug that looks comfortable? Probably the person is demonstrating the grip on the back of most of those flotation harnesses, which is intended for a human to grasp in order to pull the animal safely out of the water. If they’re scared, furkids are bound to thrash a bit, and it’s safer for you and for them to pick them up by the flotation harness. The harness is probably against his chest and under his belly, not around his neck–supporting him, not choking him (the angle of the picture isn’t ideal, and black straps against a black pup are indistinguishable to these old eyes).
You can see, even from the angle of the picture that it is right on his neck, not on his chest. And you can also tell that all 4 legs are off the ground, which is very cruel. I understand that it would probably be safer, but it still looks harmful.
I agree with “toast”; this picture is very disturbing.
Yeah that’s making sure the life vest is snug enough to hold the dog above water so he doesn’t slip out.
Pugs are notoriously bad swimmers. In that context, this photo depicts a baaaaad idea.
sooooo… if i had a pool and sweet little doggie like this… and i knew this adorable best friend of mine wasn’t the best swimmer… i think i’d get him what ever keeps him safe too.
Yup, little flotation device = good idea!! I have a harness and leash for my kitten–she dislikes it very much, but it keeps her from zooming out the door and off the third-floor balcony. Same thing. Kittehs are fast and I refuse to trust my speed versus hers.
If my doggy was running around next to a pool, I think a PFD is a good idea! Lots of doggies on boats wear them when they’re on deck.
It’s good (really good) idea to teach all puppers to swim. Just to show them where the steps are located and that they can get out there. Dog paddle turns into dog sink when they tire.
I almost lost my Dobe when visiting someone with a pool. I let him back in after getting all the luggage from the car trunk and I saw he was wet-then I saw the blood. He had totally destroyed his back nails by trying to claw his way out of the pool, since he didn’t know where the steps were. If he hadn’t been a strong, young dog he’d have never made it. This was only ten minutes and Gunther had no idea what a pool was when one of the other dogs, most likely, knocked him in.

Exactly. The same thing happened to the dog of a friend I was staying with. Allie(gator) was their youngest dog, but also their largest dog and had no idea what a pool was, since they had only recently cleaned the pool and made it ready for swimming. Well, one day I was in my room when Lucy(fer), their oldest, and smallest dog started yapping her head off. Which was not uncommon for Lucy, considering the fact that she’s a MinPin. Her barking seemed a little more insistent than usual, so I looked out my bedroom window and saw Allie struggling at the side of the pool.
Needless to say, by the time we got her out, the poor thing had worn all of her back nails down *beyond* the quick and had to spend the next week or so with her paws wrapped and the other dogs making fun of her.
Moral of the story? Show your dogs where the steps are!
