They usually serve a purpose of herding sheep over here in the UK, but they can also be kept as a family pet 
Be warned though: if you ever get one they will attempt to herd you and anyone else in your house, and if not that, they’ll herd random objects. Don’t ask why, it’s just an inbuilt instict they have *shrugz*

All true. Collies are amazingly intelligent and active, so you shouldn’t get one for a pet unless you are prepared to give a lot of time and energy to it. Lots of exercise both physical and mental is required, or the poor dog suffers. Collie owners need to be devoted and fit!
