though, if you actually read the tag, it says that the tag is not to be removed “…except by the consumer.” In other words, the real purpose of the label is so that shoppers in a store can have an accurate label for the materials in the furniture. I guess maybe one time in the distant past salesmen would lie about the quality of the materials and so someone passed a law that salesmen can’t remove the label and therefore obscure the materials disclosure.
Once you buy the furniture, though, you can do whatever the hell you want with that label. I’ve torn off a few in my time, and I know I’m not going to jail for it, ’cause it was my furniture.
That’s true today, but the text used to imply a general prohibition before the wording was clarified.
