Sorry, FAIL.
Danes are big, but they don’t go over obstacles. Heck, the owner could have put a chair there, and the adults wouldn’t even try. The puppies, maybe.
Right.. Dane’s don’t go *over* anything. They go through. If they wanted through that doorway, the gate would be torn down (gently) and moved aside. Same for a chair placed in the way. A puppy would just eat the chair. lol
That depends entirely on the Dane’s personality, upbringing and training. I have had 2 and 1 would laugh at a baby gate if someone knocked on the door or the cats walked by. The other is a perfect gentleman who wouldn’t pass even i I just place a stool in front of a doorway.
So the one that jumped a 4foot tall rail and wire fence to take a chunk out of my lab’s @$$ while I was walking him was a figment of my imagination?
Well at least I know they can be trained… The owner got a harsh verbal response along the lines of “if you can’t control your animal, I will control it permanently FOR YOU” and there have been no further problems.
If the owner failed to control his aggressive dog he is fully accountable for anything said dog did. That’s an owner fail, not a puppeh fail. Sorry about your lab.
Great Dane’s don’t jump very high? Is there a reason for that?
Teh goggies lazer EYEz are charging tehy willmelt thru teh gate !
Why the F*$K do people cut dogs ears!!!!! evil bastards.
Punkin: yes! You are totally right. Leave their ears and tails alone, what’s the matter with you morons? Also, look at these 3 big dogs shut up in a small room in what looks like a small house. Feh.
Cropping Great Dane ears started in Europe when the Dane was used mostly as a boar hunter. Boar are viscious fighters, and a Dane with a torn or ripped ear could bleed to death. There was no cosmetic motivation behind this at all – it was done to reduce the chances of the Great Dane getting an ear ripped off in a fight with a wild boar. However, the look added so much to the animal’s regal bearing, it quickly became part of the breed standard.
The standard has not evolved much. Even today, when describing the cropped ear it reads that the ears should be:
“identical in shape and length, with pointed tips. They are in balance with the head and not exaggerated in length. They are set high on the skull and carried perpendicularly at the inner edges, with as little bell as possible along the outer edges”
I’ve owned Danes for over 30 years, and have shown and bred them over 20 years. I’ve had both cropped and “natural” earred Danes. I prefer a cropped dog, and so do the judges!
The dogs in the photo were not in a small room ~ if you look closely, they were being barred from entering the kitchen…where a Dane can “counter surf” and eat food off the counters.
Kathy
Danes do not need a big house, they have the same level of energy as a bulldog. They sleep and cuddle like 20 hours per day.
I used to have a Great Dane who could totally step over the baby gate, but he never did. That’s why he was so Great!
The gate isn’t even latched.
Haha! Fooled them! We had a golden retriever who would jump the gate, wait for us to get home and stare at the window, and the second she saw you coming up the walk, she’s jump BACK over the gate and sit there wagging her tail like “Gee, can I come out? I’ve been in her aaaaalll day!” At least the danes are honest!
Haha, I have a Great Dane, and he can jump pretty high. But, he never did step over the baby gate, or go near wood floors. They are just odd dogs.
Gack! It’s Marmaduke times 3! Ca-yoot.
They look creepy… Like the face from Scream…
Die pls
it’s teh eyes dat r creepy. but they are nice dogs. it’s not the dog’s fault if the owner is crap at training. i feel sorry for dogs like that.
Yes, it’s true they were cropped originally due to their job. However now it is a cosmetic procedure.
Not to mention the original crop job of a Great Dane is nothing like what we see today. They were cute very close to the head. The long erect ears of today are not at all how they used to be and only adds to the fact that it is done for looks only.
While judges may “prefer” a cropped look it shouldn’t matter. If owners and breeders stepped up to the plate and left their dogs with natural ears then the judges would have no choice. Don’t use the judge as an escape for cutting off the ears.
