Totally! Huge rotweiler/mastiff/lab mutt, lived with him since I was 4. He never bit me, and only bit another dog once…because that doggie attacked me so my Waylon was of the opinion No one hurts my Amber. I would always wrestle and fight with him and he also made the best pillow lying on the floor watching TV. I love big doggies, they are the best thing in the world!!!!

Hi,
I fully agree with you. I have two daschunds. They are such great company
for my 11 year old girl. She lost her father last year but the dogs have filled the vacuum to a large extent. I also dream of growing old with the dogs once the girl leaves for college. bless you and your love for the dogs.

This one made me cry.

Before I was born, my grandmother had a border collie. The moment that dog laid eyes on me, when I was just a few days old, suddenly *I* had a border collie. She guarded me from everything, including vicious packs of aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Nobody was allowed to touch me except my parents, who she grudgingly allowed to feed me and change my diapers. Anybody else who tried to touch me suddenly had a snarling dog between them and me. I never had a babysitter, my parents used to put me out the front door with the dog and know that nothing could ever harm me, and that she’d gently herd me back into the house at appropriate times. No child ever felt safer.

She *did* guard me forever, until the day she lay down her noble head and died. Even then, in her last weeks she managed to take in a puppy that came wandering down the street one day, refused to let my parents get rid of him (she was a *formidable* dog), and actually taught him her tricks. He turned out to be a border collie too, and he was with me to love and protect me until I was 18, when he died a week after I left for college.

I miss them both terribly.

This reminds me of the dog my parents had before i was born. Her name was Penny. Well…Penny had already had her pups but when i was born she took to me quickly. She would sleep under my bed, or lay beside me as I slept or played on the floor. She was my protector, and even though she didn’t even reach your kneecaps, she was ferocious when it came to protecting me, and later on, my brother. She was a good and loving dog, she lived to be about 15 yrs old. I’ll always remember her. She gave kisses when asked.

I posted this photo last week – grandson of my mother’s good friend. Apparently the pup (Rhodesian Ridgeback mix) does this EVERY time they put the baby in the crib. I guess everyone gets a guardian angel at some point!

*melt* Reminds me of a story my parents told me. They had a german shepherd/husky mix (Shadow) and the day they brought me home from the hospital he became my babysitter. Sniffed me, licked me from my toes to my head and curled up next to me. From then on he slept under my crib or swing, and when I fussed he’d go wake up my mom. I miss my puppywog
