I’ve never cropped any of our Pit’s ears, it comes down to a personal preference but the unfortunate part is that some people do crop them for fighting and others because that’s how they are used to seeing the breed.

I am so glad to find that someone else likes to call them Pibbles.

As for the ears, meh, done by an experienced vet with proper aftercare– I wouldn’t but I’ll save cries of “abuse” for other things. With Violet, it wasn’t, but that’s all behind her and there is NO PART of that dog that isn’t GORGEOUS. You go, Violet! And YOU go, Violet’s hoomins!!

Ear cropping and tail docking are needed and not needed at the same time, it just depends on what you do with your dog. My dogs are working dogs, and farm dogs. Better to crop the ears and tails when there young then have them ripped off and damaged when they get into a spat with a coyote or any other animal for that fact. I cropped my first pit’s tail even though he was an inside dog, it was a decision I made when I saw his mom. Her tail has been broken twice, the end is bald and its always cut in one way or another because she gets so excited that she whacks it off tables, and walls and other house hold objects. But unless your dog NEEDS to have their ears cropped or their tails docked, don’t do it.

Tail docking is pretty harmless when you do it right, and when they are young. I use sheep castration elastics, you push the skin down on the tail, find the 3rd vertebrae and slip it on. The end of the tail dies off from not getting blood and falls off in a few days. Hurts much less then circumcising baby boys because after about 25 min. they loose the feeling in their tail. You get a good clean tail with this method, and you don’t get the ugly bald patch on the end, or that little point of hair.

Clean your dogs ears once a week and you won’t have to put them through the incredibly painful procedure of cutting off half their ear. Its an absolutely unnecessary anesthetic risk..

To preface this, I work professionally in the animal medical field and volunteer in animal rescue and that’s not why they get their ears cut. Ear cropping is only done for sporting reasons or as a “breed standard” by the AKC or UKC. For example, when in the field hunting game, some breeds of dogs IE Dogo De Argentino’s, would have their ears cropped so the prey cannot latch onto ears/tails. Since most confirmation dogs in AKC shows are not working dogs, the AKC has relaxed it’s standards on some breeds like dobermans, giant schnauzers etc. so they can have natural ears. Dogs that are pets have no reason to get their ears cropped. AmStaffs, Staffies, other bully breeds and dobermans actually have what is called prick or half prick ears and aren’t predisposed to ear infections. Do you ever see cocker spaniels, labs or golden retrievers with cropped ears? No, didn’t think so. Those are the dogs that actually have chronic ear infections. So by your theory they should start cropping their ears.

Great for you, lady. Anyone who rescues a pit bull is a hero in my book. That’s how I got my puppeh- a friend rescued her mom just before she had a litter of 8 and now they all have great homes!

Just because “it’s done” isn’t a good reason. I know a great deal about dogs and there’s NOT a single valid reason in this day and age to cut a dog’s ears.
Nowadays you can often tell if a pit/pit mix is a rescue or not because many of the rescues from abuse and neglect situations have cut ears.
My pit mix has the most adorable, floppy, expressive ears. I can’t imagine her without him.

OMG! Get those puppies away from that Pit! You *know* those are just snacks for later! Kidding, kidding… Please know that I’m kidding.

What a gorgeous girl – that’s my second favorite coloring on a Pittie (brindle is my first). Grrr to her previous owner! Even if he/she *had* gotten the crop job done properly, cutting a dog’s ears and/or tail prevents them from being able to communicate properly with other dogs. The only reason to ever crop a Pit’s tail (or a dog in a similar situation) is if it has Happy Tail and always busts is open. My friend has a foster Pit that not only busts the tip of his tail open, but also cuts his sides with it – he’s totally going to get his tail cropped soon.

Trainer, I admire your daughter’s dedication. I too have raised a formerly abused dog – an American Eskimo… who still has fear issues. My comment about the cut ears was certainly not meant to offend you or your daughter. It’s just a comment about how sick some people are that they treat animals like non-sentient beings, who are there for our pleasure and to cater to our whims.

Poor Violet having to endure the chop job that she did, and my hat’s off to your daughter for her love and patience..*tips hat*

Not to be a downer on such a fun site but it was horrible job, done with scissors by someone who didn’t know what he was doing. It was VERY inhumane but Violet is now in a wonderful home and is the “dog of a lifetime” for my daughter. They are almost inseparable. She works with my daughter both in the vet clinic and while training classes and everywhere my daughter can take her, she does.

And Violet loves her Grandmama too! Everytime I see her now, she gives me a big grin (the one that looks like a snarl- not the Pittie smile) and runs up to me for lots of love and treats.

So, please, let’s just enjoy this beautiful, sweet dog and those smushy little puppies. None of them had any say in their circumstances yet they have moved on to wonderful lives.

yes that is true, but that style of cut is fighting style. basicly there is no ear left. i didnt crop my babies ears, but if i had it would not be that short, and it would only have been if they flopped over, so she wouldnt have gotten ear infections.

I’m the one who originally posted this picture on the net. Violet, the “momma”, is my grand-dog. She was adopted by my daughter from the local pound, the very first Pit Bull that allowed to be adopted. Her ears were already cropped and I think they are beautiful because they’re a reminder of how much she’s been through and how far she’s come. (I always cry as I write or talk about this.)

She had severe fear issues and it was months before she would approach me. My daughter worked with her so patiently and now she is a demo dog in our dog training classes and so HAPPY.

As for the puppies- which everyone always mentions too- those are not hers. She is the FOSTER momma. My daughter works in a vet clinic and these were the puppies of a dog found as a stray. My daughtered fostered them and they are now in great homes.

the question should be who TF fights dogs…sadists, that’s who. pit bull ears cut in this fashion are intended to be “fighting prop” and show that the dog was raised to be a fighter or someone just wanted it to look that way. hope this girl is no longer under the “care” of whoever did that to her.
