Thanks so much for posting this link. This brings tears to my eyes, but awareness is a beautiful thing.
mans best friend for better or for worst….-sniffle-sniffle- WAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! ITS SOOOO SAD!!!!!
Do you know if there’s something like this outside the US at all? I live in the UK and really want to try to help out homeless pooches and their owners but this is the first time I ever heard of a charity specifically for them.
Thank you for your support! Feeding Pets of the Homeless is a nonprofit member organziation. Members collect pet food and partner with a food bank or a soup kitchen that distributes the pet food. Through donations we are now able to give veterinarians money to administer medical care to these pets. As of today we have 54 members in 22 states and one new member in Canada.
This reminds me of a time when I was in California as a kid… My mom’s friend was taking me around various stores and I saw a homeless lady with a shopping cart and a little black cat on a leash. I went back in the store and bought a tin of catfood and traded the lady for a pretty stone she’d found.
Such a cute pic! made me cry! Gen, what r da first letters of ur middle school? i might no u…
Ann, I also want to thank you for posting this link. I contacted the site and promised my support. My donation is going out in the mail first thing in the morning. Sadly, “Feeding Pets of the Homeless” is not represented here in Oklahoma where I live. I will, of course, need to reflect on this carefully and with discernment but maybe it will unfold that I can do something about that. We’ll see.
Ellie – where in Oklahoma are you?!?!? I’m in Tulsa – I’d never heard of any service like this, but I know there are plenty of people who would benefit. I know a lot of the vets provide lower-cost services for people who find stray animals and want to help them…..
Drop me a line on my blog, k?
–Elfinugget
Thank you for the link! I’ll definitely be adding this organization to the list of charities to which I donate.
I see a lot of homeless people with dogs in my city, and will often carry a couple of bags of groceries in my car — one with non-perishables for the person, and one with food and treats for the doggie — so that I can hand them over whenever I see someone who needs them. As a bonus, I usually get to pet the dog.
Thanks to the link, our lolcat and goggie have donated 100 years of their allowance money to help puppehs and kittehs less fortunate.
yes, thanks!! i will give. <3
Thx! Made our donation, but no chapter here in SC….but there is a veterinary practice right across the street from my office, whom I believe I will be paying a visit. My four hairy children said I must.
This dog looks just like the dog on the first photo on petsofhomeless.com, same comfy lap-spot and all.
what a ride, laff laff laff, then this.
turned this tuff guy into a whimpering puddle.
glad i was alone when i saw it.

Thats so adorable
Y awl hot dog pix bringz da sad? Iz gud kwestyun, no? Goggie in rayn, fyrman n dohbee, dis…
Also I tinks dat man, nawt boy, but stil bringz da sad.
The fireman and the dobie – according to what I’ve read, he saved her puppies from a burning house, and she thanked him for it. That’s not sad…that’s just proof positive of what most of us have known all along: dogs really are the best people!
(That dog in the rain, sitting in the middle of the street…man. That one haunts me.)
Love is an awesome thing.
This isn’t funny.
You’re right, its not, but its a reality in this world, and it is a touching picture showing the bond between dog and man knows only love and not physical possession.
It is a touching picture. I kind of hate the lolspeak caption for it though. The picture is much better off by itself.
omg… this is like…the most emotional macro I’ve ever seen.
;_;
mus hold bak teers!
That’s just depressing.
ahhh..:(
ARE YOU TRYING TO BREAK MY HEART????? ARE YOU>??!?!?!
WELL GOOD JOB.
*CRYING BUKKETS OF TEARS FOR DOG & HOOMAN*
This breaks my heart. When I was doing some studies in Oxford, I met a man begging on the street with this dog. I spent some time talking to him and asked him about getting some help. He said, yes, he’d looked into some of the helping agencies but all of them required that he get rid of his dog to get off the streets. That he wouldn’t do. I was proud of him and I told him so. That man’s devotion to his dog was the main thing giving him hope and keeping him truly human. And the social service people want to dehumanize him? It just made me sick.
I wish I knew how to find the boy in this picture. I would do everything in my power to help him.
Cesar Milan makes the point that the dogs that have homeless humans are often better adjusted than ones that live in the suburbs.
The most recent issue of BEST FRIENDS magazine had an article on the lives of these street dogs. It’s not all good–many die from fights with other street dogs.
I would never ask a homeless person to abandon their canine family member.
*heart breaking all da place*
Yes, that is so true.
Poverty is one of the predominant issues here in the Philippines. I got to see scenes like this a lot when I used to live in the city. My family used to help the people squatting in an empty lot across our street, and we always witnessed how much they loved their dog: they would share everything with the dog even at their own expense
I sometimes let my dogs play with their dog whenever I took my dogs out for walks… Their dog was very friendly and well-adjusted, unlike some of our neighbors’ who were very fierce because they were kept outside and rarely got TLC
I’m in Seattle and shelters will allow furpeople if the homeless person has a doctor’s note saying that the furperson is necessary therapy for the human. Once you get beyond shelters it is hard to find low-income housing that allows pets – but I just found one for a friend! Again, a doctor’s letter may overrule management policy. Many homeless people are mentally ill – which includes alcoholics and drug addicts – and may “look ok” but aren’t able to work or manage the benefits they may get. When you see me and my dog get out of the car and you wonder why we have a handicapped license plate because we “look ok”, know that there is a story behind it. Take away my (invisible) illness and I will happily give up the special parking. Please! Yes, it’s a sad pic and yes it shows a lot of love. But is that a cigarette?
is not cigarette, is decorative piping on collar of sweater. if yoo look closely, goes all way round neck. Angle of his head does make it look like it could be cigarette though
It’s not a cigarette. I thought it was at first, too, but it’s just the trim around the neck of the man’s sweater. You can see the same white trim on the other side, above the doggie’s head.
It’s a well-known fact that tobacco staves off hunger pangs…and I wouldn’t judge anyone based on the fact that they smoke; I don’t know about the rest of you but I’ve seen the disenfranchised digging through public ashtrays and picking butts out of the gutter on more than one occasion.
I don’t think anyone was judging the man for smoking. It just looks at first glance like there is a cigarette dangerously close to the doggie’s face. But it’s a moot point anyway since it’s just the trim on his sweater collar.
Not funny. Sad.
Stop being sad. This site for funny.
Says who?
A little social commentary in the guise of humor (a la Reign Over Me) is never a bad thing.
This is a depressing, but really wonderfully done, caption. Bravo.
I guess I just prefer not crying at work.
Gawdluvvem both.
lolspeak aside, when I lived in San Francisco I walked the 9 blocks to work on a very busy street. I passed several people who this man reminds me of. I don’t know how many but a lot of people used to give them food for the man (or woman) and their pet. Most people really do have good hearts.
Dis site is sweet…gotta have da sadz wif da happies cuz dat is life.
Wonderful philosophy, Sudiegirl. You’re so right and I’m so glad you said so.
Sweet puppy knows the meaning of love.
*sniff* I wish I could give them both a home. So sad. *cries*
Oh man oh man oh man. This is soooooo much a sad.
Big, tremendous hugs to both of the folks in this piksher. Hooman an de doggie.
I don’t find any sadness in this picture. Ask the man, ask the dog, and both of them will swear by god that they’re happy at this very moment.
As bucky said above I think that dogs of homeless people often are happier than pets of “regular” families, because they get 24 hrs of attention every day, and in most cases they are loved as the most important creature in the lifes of these people.
Nonetheless I think that this picture has very, very strong emotions.
This made me cry. I know they look happy, but god, I just want to reach out and hug them and give them a home. My heart. It is breaking. T_T
most touching loldog eva!
I Cried.
Animals have so much to teach us….
I just keep coming back and looking at this photo, half because I just can’t stop thinking about how sad it is and how much I desperately want to help and half because I think it’s one of the most touching, loving, happy photos I’ve ever seen. The way the dog and the man are cuddled together, they’re all they have and they love each other so much and get such comfort from each other.
Definitely made me cry and think about the world, thanks for posting it.
It’s true, Wabbit. I have never had a human-love so devoted as this dog and his boy (however old the boy is… he could be 30, I dunno)……
I hope these two find a happy place together. They deserve it.
Let’s all take a moment to remember how lucky we are, mmmkay?
*nods* True. :’(
Everyday I strive to be the person that my Dogs think I am.
Well said!
I think there is a lot of truth in this caption. IMO, the writer said it all.
Wow, all these bleeding heart comments — I guess most of you don’t live in a city like Portland that’s a magnet for streetpunks — every summer thousands of them come here and panhandle on the streets. Most of them are able-bodied and perfectly capable of working, but they choose not to…sorry, but all I see is a guy who looks like he could get a job but won’t
Ok, let the flames begin
Sometimes I feel the same way, but, as Reba mentioned above, there are “invisible” health issues. Streetpunks, otoh, can kiss my hiney.
*chuckles* Listen to me. As if I knew their stories…
Something just occured to me: what of he’s having a hard time finding gainful employment because he has nowhere to keep his buddy?
Wow.
Anyway, DB, no flames – I get you.
It takes a pretty jaded bunny to see a lazy bum when looking at that picture. The kid doesn’t look much older that 14 or 15 at the most.
There is no way of telling from the photo, that is correct. But come hang out on the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver and see if DB doesn’t have a point.
“looks like he could get a job but wonโt”
How do you know? Even if we ignore everything else (maybe a possible illness, an addiction, whatever), would *you* hire a homeless person who looked like the man in the picture to work for you? Most people wouldn’t… :/
Try not to make assumptions until you find yourself in that situation. It can’t be as simple as “choice and will”.
I happen to live just outside Portland Oregon. I was homeless in Portland oregon just two years ago, too. Met some awesome folks. Met a few so-called ’street punks’, but met way more people striving to get off the streets. Secret is, most of the ones out panhandling are out the next day looking for work. I’ve met kids who are panhandling for weeks just to be able to buy a good suit that they can go to interviews in, and others just trying to find a little coin for a prescription they need filled that the ‘free clinics’ can’t get ahold of for them.
Street-punks? Hate ‘em, but they get bored and move on to another city and another time.
Most of the panhandlers I met that weren’t gone in a week, were honest to goodness homeless folks just tryin’ to make it by.
Checked up on the ones I could find (most of the people I met while homeless downtown). All but 1 of them is gainfully employed, a couple married and expecting, and all of them are off the streets and doing well for themselves. (The one who isn’t employed, is living with his ill mother and caring for her full time.)
You’re expecting flames because even you know that that was a wrong, bigoted, and unreasonable remark.
Next time listen to that little voice in your head. It’s called a conscience and can help you.
Broke my heart. God bless ‘em both.
this is so unbelievably sweet. it brought tears to my eyes
while i agree that looking out for homeless animals and humans is an issue for attention, how do u know this guy is homeless? just b/c the caption says something like it? remember these pics are not necessarrily from the poster, no one really knows the history unless they provided the pic, right?
that being said, look at the look of love and contentment on that pups face, I swear he is smiling and habouring a warm fuzzy feeling because that guy is cuddling him so nicely! Awwww!! so sweet.
I keep tryin to tell myself dis- Goggie and hoomin might jus be tyred after playin in da park mabeh. But iz can’t luk mor at dis pik at wurk. All da sadz get on meh an mah stoodints tink der is trajedy at skool!
No Flames Dustbunny – I live in portland and and have ran across many here like the guy above. They can and have options for people with pets on the streets. It takes work and many of the able bodied find excuses not to go through the process. I cheer those that do and feel bad for the puppies of the owners that dont, it all comes down to choice and will.
Great pic, great caption. Lets hope the guy in the picture is one that strives for more.
Dis amazing foto.. our heartz go to dem
thnx for dis!
too much sad!
Touching indication of the basic needs of a pet without a home. Very sad.
Is there any way to know the source for this poignant picture?
*wibble*
jesus christ this is a sad picture.
I don’t know, I find this rather repulsive. If that guy cared about his dog, he’d give it up so it could find a warm, loving home. Living on the streets, starving, spending days without eating… This is not the life an animal is supposed to have. If he made wrong choices in his life then that’s his to deal with but to put an animal through it… I will shed tears for the dog but I can’t cry for him.
And I always give change to the homeless, there’s tons of them around where I work. But this is wrong.
except…..
if, as others have already stated, the guy’s problem is mental illness, it could be the dog is what keeps him going. looking after his furry friend’s needs may be what keeps him alive.
it could be that if he gave the dog to a warm, loving home, he would be giving up his reason for living. is that worth it?
I think only the guy in this picture can determine that and all we can do is decide how we will respond to the issue of homelessness and its attendant factors.
even though i disagree, i understand where you’re coming from too. it’s not like the dog knows better to live in a fancier home. i think there are nuances here though like the poster above me said, that a lot of times homeless people have conditions like schizophrenia or depression and perhaps having a pet calms them down.
and maybe it was sentiments like yours that started a charity (like the posted link above) that caters to, not the homeless guys so much, the animals.
As a person who struggled with addiction and other issues… and as one who found herself homeless a few times, I would just like to point out that not everyone’s life is ideal. Crap happens and sometimes you just don’t have what it takes to deal with it. But seeing my kitteh’s face everyday, knowing that he relied on me and needed me and loved me no matter what – when nobody else did – kept me from giving up completely. Literally.
The puppy in that picture is a happy puppy. There is no other human that he wants to be with. He loves and trusts his human… and I know his human loves him. And do you not see the kibble on the ground? I know that my kitteh ate better than I did when I went through hard times… I made sure of it and I bet his human does too.
I think it’s wonderful that they have each other.
I’m in agreement with lilybee – Though I was never homeless, I had some very distraught times when I had no idea what to do with myself. It was having pets that made me keep going to work, keep trying hard to take care of them and to take care of myself enough to KEEP taking care of them.
Beautiful comment win.

This is my new favorite picture too…It’s so sad.
I’m donating the money I was going to spend on an expensive hat to that homeless pets site. It’s a much better cause 0_0
who are you to dictate that this isn’t right. It is of no doubt that he loves his dog and most likely puts its care before his own.
The man COULD give up his dog to a shelter to find a “warm, loving home” but guess what? Shelters are full. People don’t want dogs whose background they don’t know. What if the dog isn’t good with kids? Or now having been an outdoor animal will be a constant run risk? The dog will end up in the shelter time and time again and eventually be euthanized. I agree responsible pet care is of the utmost importance but it seems he is doing his best to be a responsible pet owner. There are many dogs in actual houses who do not see this kind of attention and adoration, not by a long shot. The situation is sad, but as long as the animal is happy then we are not ones to judge this bond.
That is absolutely beautiful & made me cry.
What a sweet and sad picture. It made me sad, and made me really think of the beautiful bond we have with our animals — who don’t judge us but just love us. And thanks for the link about petcare for the homeless.
It brought tears to my eyes, I am stubborn, I would never give up my animals. They are family and can calm you in some of the worst times. Sqeeze a fat cat and everything doesn’t seem so bad. Such a touching pic.
Oh Hai! dat waz soooo sads
I serusly got teary eyed!
This is a very sweet photo. thanks for the link for the charity I am going to put it on my favs.
I have a fascination with homeless people. I just think that they are more understanding of what the necessities of life are. This is just proof. Food and love are it, it would seem.
I donated too. Thanks for including this macro. it was sad, but it’s nice that it helped spread the word.
Maybe the boy is a runaway. Maybe he hides from an abusive home life. It’s not right to judge when you don’t know for sure. But there must be good in him somewhere, his dog loves him!
I’ve talked to this guy a couple of times… Good guy, good dog, he holds the dog like that cause the dog doesn’t like strangers so much, makes him nervous…
Oh wow ….. that just grabbed me even more.
this is one of the most beautiful photographs i have ever seen.
its seriously changing my views of life and being homeless. not that i ever looked down on them before… it just casts things in a whole new light.
This pic has gotten more posts than any other by a factor of… well, about a million. I think that says something about the hearts and minds of the people who come here. Yeah, we come here to escape the pathos of life, but we are willing to step up and embrace it, too, when it’s staring us in the face. And even try to change it. I’m proud to be in your company, HotDoggers.
Please forgive my lack of grammar. I am too moved to Hotdogspeak.
-tries not to cry- -sniffle…- waaaaaaaaaa!!!!! it’s to sad and cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn’t sleep until now…we need to help these guys!
Wonderful picture. Now I have a sad. Thanks for posting the link. I will see about adding it to my other animal welfare donations.
when I first looked I thought the man is the dog’s home and then I looked again and knew the dog is the man’s home .
I was, without question, deeply moved by this photo. Reading through the comments, my emotions literally ‘ran the gamut.’ But your simple comment, kathadee, is the simple Truth. Perhaps God intended the word dog to be God spelled backward.
This is soooooo touching… I’m crying over here… awwww…
awwwwwss, just wanna tak dem home wis meeeee
new to lol speak, so speak “normal”. is the dog in the above photo the same dog as on the link provided for the feeding the homeless animals? just wondering. but anyway i need to go empty the buckets of tears. i cant look at photo without tearing up.
Crazy – I think it is… I wondered that myself, and I think the dog is the same one.
I think so — just from a different angle.
This is amazing. I am trying to hold back tears. Thank you, this really makes me think about what we should do.
Thank you so much for posting this… it’s incredible and never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
i know this pair.
they’re usually sat at the NW corner of Spadina & Queen in Toronto, Ontario.
one time i gave them my lunch… but i can’t do that everyday.
one time he yelled at everyone and cried and said he was hungry. i hid my tears all the way home cause if you offer money after that you get swarmed and big boys don’t cry (even if they live with kittehs).
there are too many homeless, with and without pets, in Toronto and it gets really frackin’ cold in winter – really really hot in summer.
sad. s’all i gotta say.
but someone showed these two how to love and they’re pumping out a storm of it.
wow, this one is so touching, i also cried, it didnt help that a sad song started playing at random on my playlist. i wish i could give all my money to animal charities…
ABORABLE!
I believe this photograph was originally taken by Sam Javanrouh.

OMGZ I WAS SO SAD TAHT I DONATED $10 TO TAHT LINK TAHT ANN GAVE!!!1!
Thanks for posting this pic and bringing attention to this sort of need. Breaks my heart to think of any living being starving to death.
There is a homeless man who is sometimes outside the local rite aid. He has a dog, and every time I see him and his dog, it breaks my heart. And I usually have no money, so I can’t give them any food. I always feel bad about not being able to help them.
This shits awesome. Im going to spread this around and make more people aware. Thats is the most moving picture ever. Here i am ejoying my internet and uber gaming pc with my dog Cofee and there they are… Suddenly I realized I spend too much.
Hey, anybawdy no hoo taked dis pic? if we culd get in tuch wit dem, we culd find out wayr de boy an his goggie liv so we can help dem.
So sad!!!!! I have a sad now!!!!
waaa!
That is such a moving picture. Thanks for sharing.
please, someone, tell me this person was helped. Everyone and everything deserves a home. *tear*
I will print dis owt and show 2 all my skoolfriends, is that k? Dey will donate 2? Plz sey dat is k!
i hav seen meny homeless ppl, but no wiv googies. i am in UK, so can i send donations 2 charitee? I giv cans o’ cat food 2 cat shelter, at morrisons dey hav bukkit 4 catfood 4 da lolcats!
there’s enough love in that pic to make me feel and believe both of them deserve better
this guy lives in Toronto, Ontario on Queen street downtown. He panhandles in front of the McDonalds at Queen and Spadina. I was homeless myself once and he and his dog stayed with me that night to make sure I wasn’t alone. That dog LIVES in his lap, and wears HIS coat in the winter. I urge everyone to be kind to the homeless, even the ones addicted to drugs, with dogs. I guarantee you they feed the dogs and take care of them better than themselves.
beautiful. And even a homeless dog with a homeless human is better off then a homeless dog with nobody to love it. Dogs are domesticated, they need humans and love. And lots of humans out there need the undying love of their pets. I should know, my pet died yesterday and I’m heartbroken, this photo just set me off I’m going to be crying all day now!
I was homeless for 3 years. I had pets of my own with me( a pair of tame rats; mother & daughter); but one of my faves was a dog that belonged to a homeless woman. Sadie was one of “the gals”. It’s true: homeless folks feed their pets before themselves. Thanks for letting me speak. BTW: I live with friends & am no longer homeless.
I don’t have the money to donate, but I just saw this picture tonight, and wow…….I wish I could help them right now. I live from check to check with debts but I have food I could cook them both. This is one of the most beautiful pictures I’ve ever seen. The love is literally oozing out of the picture, I can practically see the love in the form of tangible hearts surrounding them……..
<3 <3 <3 <3
Well, there goes the English language…
I’ve never really been one of those people to go out of my way to help the homeless but I was surprised how much seeing this picture and reading the comments brought tears to my eyes. I have 2 cats I adopted from animal shelters. And not to be mean but I find ‘talkin lik dis’ sort of spelling incredibly difficult (and annoying) to read.
I knew a homeless lady who wouldn’t go into shelters because of her wonderful 16-year-old goggie, Bill. I always gave her extra when the weather was bad, so they could stay in a motel. Homeless people iz still people, and their goggies are SO loved. Thanks, SO much, Ann, fo the link. Iz be helpin. Blessings on ALL goggies and ALL peoples.
how you know you have ahappy if you never have a sad ?
to every one who dissed this guy shame on you
to thsoe that know inviible illness is a rela issuse good job you
i live with an invisable illness its called autisum i talk best to my cat
just think next time it might not be drugs it might not be bozze it could be shear terror of being beaten coz you dont know whats going on
think on it
you may not beable to give money (i know i cant never have any my slef ) but half a sandwich or an extra blanket might jsut make that life a little better
if you cant dot that dont look away look at the person as tho tehy where your family it mght be the only look tehy get that day that wasnt of pitty or fear
I think your comment is beautiful. And so right.
I’ve seen these two around New York.
Actually there is a comment higher up that these two live in Toronto, and considering the French on the McDonald’s cup, I’d say that this pic was not taken in the US.
Actually, that red text is a bubble of many different languages saying, “I’m Lovin’ It” and is definitely available in the US.
I get the same cup every time I get a drink or a shake.
I started to cry when I saw this. So sad, and so beautiful. I hope there lifes gets better, both of them, together.
how sad =( people don’t like to believe it, but there are homeless people out there who aren’t druggies and just have bad luck.
if something like that happened to me, i’d have to bring my dog. i need her <333
if somthing like this happened to me i would bring my dog too because he needs me and i need him…
awwwwww
ASDFGHJKL
i saw dis foto … mousiesobbz all ober da plaec
This is so touching. I started crying as soon as I saw it.
ive seen some extreme stuff. people with everything taken away. the love showed between this human and his fur-person makes you re-think whether u really need the big boat or that expensive computer. you don’t have to but donating to the site about is a good thing. I am only 14 and when i saw this pic i teared up. i earned $300 dollars recently and i am gonna donate every penny to this site. this is a very emotional pic.
Thats heart-melting. People go on and spend their money on shoes, and coats, but there are others who cant. We dont need these things, we as humans want too much. All we need is someone to love.
umm, sorry but this is not the saddest thing I have seen. If it is for you then you are in for a shock. I guess I have no heart.
In Proverbs it says things like “Better is a little, with love, than feasting, with strife!”
I so totally agree with this dawg…..I still get teary thinking about this pic a year later!!
So sad and true
I hope this isn’t real. It’s so heart breaking. Being from a big city, it’s impossible not to see homeless people on the corners. Anytime I see a man or woman with a pet, I run and get a bag of dog food, a water dish, a gallon of water, and something for the person. I may be tight on cash, but I’ll go negative in my account to help a man trying to get by with his dog. The dog in this picture is clearly well loved. <3
